Shoji Mochida

Mochida uses ceramics, a material that lies between practical use and art, to create works that relativize value standards such as purpose and perfection. In his "#figure" series, he likens what would normally be considered defects, such as kiln changes, glaze peeling, and pinholes, to "rare pops," a term used to refer to monsters with a low appearance rate in games, and presents them as being imbued with chance. By deliberately turning parts that would be discarded if they appeared in a vessel into figures, he shifts the boundary between failure and success in ceramic art and questions the very perspective of appreciation.
