Gentaro Yokoyama

Born in Tokyo.
In 2001, her work was selected for the "Teapot 100 Exhibition" in Maryland, USA, and in 2003, for the "22nd Echizen Ceramic Art Festival Unique Vessels Exhibition 2003." In 2009, she participated in the group exhibition "Creating by Hand" at Art Tower Mito. In 2015, she held a solo exhibition "WHITE OUT" (Ginza Mitsukoshi), and in 2016, a solo exhibition in Busan, Korea, among other exhibitions at galleries both in Japan and abroad. Since 2018, she has been producing tea ceremonies as part of "The TEA-ROOM".

Amoebas that seem to move at any moment, and underwear and breasts that convey warmth and softness. This artist is attempting to revolutionize ceramics with a creative style that takes motifs far removed from traditional crafts and is not bound by techniques or materials. The "Bōsō Chawan (Runaway Tea Bowls)" series, created to explore the values found between "use and beauty" that have been discussed in ceramics and crafts, delves into the possibilities of "Chanoyu," Japan's comprehensive art form. The artist, who has also been creating tea utensils, combines the tea ceremony with "Bōsōzoku" (motorcycle gangs), a Japanese subculture that can be considered its antithesis. She creates vessels that imitate long-haired hairstyles and tea bowls that "modify" existing Kutani ware. There is no grand cause of resisting authority; rather, the thrill of disruptive behavior, which aims to disturb the prevailing atmosphere of society as a whole, overlaps with the artist's approach to traditional crafts and, by extension, to creative activities. The artist hopes to encounter beauty at the intersection of these two concepts, both sharing the keyword "way."
