Statement

YUGEN Gallery will be holding Suzuki Jun's solo exhibition "Precious Memories" from Saturday, June 22nd to Monday, July 1st, 2024.

In this exhibition, in addition to the new series "VHS," which expresses the "irreplaceable memories" theme of the exhibition title, new works of "Dokuro-kun" and "Gorotaro" will be announced, and the artist will be taking orders for his first "Words Series."

The artist will present a series of works that express his ideas about "precious memories."

An exhibition by contemporary artist Suzuki Jun, known for his pop line drawings.

This will be the second exhibition curated by Noma Hirotaka, following "Add", the first group exhibition since the relocation of YUGEN Gallery in April 2024.

The exhibition title "Precious Memories" means "irreplaceable memories." People have important words, favorite numbers, beloved pets, and other emotional support, as well as memorable words. In this exhibition, Suzuki Jun's ideas of "precious memories" are expressed as artworks.

This exhibition will feature a series of works that depict various creatures against the background of words such as LOVE and HELLO; the character "Skull-kun," born from a creative process that confronted the sense of life and death; the character "Gorotaro," born from the weaving together of happiness and prayers with the baton of life; and the new series "VHS," inspired by the VHS tapes that preserved people's precious memories from the 1980s and 1990s.

In addition, for the first time, Suzuki will be accepting orders for custom-made works only during the exhibition period. Customers' favorite words, numbers, beloved pets, and more will be expressed through Suzuki's handwriting. For details on how to order, please see the gallery's official website.

Please come to this exhibition and experience "preserving new memories in a tangible form" through Jun Suzuki's art.

Artist Statement

The works with the words LOVE and HELLO written on them are a series created with the intention of creating an emotional connection with the viewer. In the background of the works, there are drawings of creatures with various emotions, showing innocent expressions of love and joy.

Skulls have been my favorite motif since I was a child, and as I grew up, the image of death became stronger. As I continued to create works that confronted the sense of life and death, I realized that thinking about death is the same as thinking desperately about living. That's how Skull-kun was born.

Then in 2022, the cat I had since I was in elementary school passed away. I learned that the baton of life of a cat who lived a hard life is passed on to the lives of those living in the present, along with many wishes, prayers, and warm thoughts. Meanwhile, Gorotaro was a cat who was rescued in my hometown of Miyagi Prefecture. He came to live with my parents and received the baton of a new life. I have him appear in my work with the hope that humans and animals alike can live together while feeling happy.

I want to deliver works filled with positive thoughts to people of the present and future. I believe that this will help connect positive thoughts.
