These artworks are presented as a joint project between YUGEN Gallery's participation in "IWATAYA Life with Art 2026" and the three-person exhibition "Beyond Words, Outside Meaning," currently being held at YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA. The works explore the evolving relationship between words and images, focusing on how the forms and meanings of characters alter the perception of objects and light.
Yoichiro Otani creates visual poetry through characters, discovering new connections between the forms, sounds, and meanings of Kanji. While the Kanji accumulated on the canvas serve as symbols for conveying meaning, they transform into images evocative of landscapes and natural presence, eliciting a sense of fluctuation that arises between looking and reading.
