This work is presented as a collaborative project between YUGEN Gallery's exhibition at "IWATAYA Life with Art 2026" and the ongoing three-person exhibition "Beyond Words, Outside Meaning" at YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA. Focusing on how the forms and meanings of characters alter the perception of objects and light, it explores new relationships between language and imagery.
Yoichiro Otani creates visual poetry by discovering new connections between the forms, sounds, and meanings of kanji. The characters accumulated on the canvas serve as symbols that convey meaning while simultaneously transforming into images evocative of landscapes and the atmosphere of nature, eliciting a sense of fluctuation born between looking and reading.
