FAMILY

Nori Okawa

Ōkawa Nori's works are characterized by their reinterpretation of the concept of ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) with a modern sensibility. In the "FAMILY" series, the theme is the process of self-formation, expressing how the self is shaped through encounters with "foreign objects" outside of preconceived notions. By accepting, chewing on, swallowing, and eventually digesting different values, people gradually acquire their own distinct outlines.

Here, "family" is not limited to a framework of blood relations, but rather a totality of relationships that includes different cultures, religions, and even chance encounters. Oikawa depicts the form of the self that is born from interaction with diverse others as a modern "floating world."
