FAMILY

Nori Okawa

Okawa Ki's work is characterized by a reinterpretation of the concepts of ukiyo-e with a modern sensibility. In his "FAMILY" series, he explores the process of self-formation, expressing how the self is shaped through encounters with "foreign objects" outside of preconceived notions. People acquire their own identity by accepting, absorbing, and swallowing different values, eventually resigning them to their deepest recesses.

"Family" here is not limited to blood ties, but is a totality of relationships that includes different cultures, religions, and even chance encounters. Taiga depicts the shape of the self that is born through interactions with diverse others as a modern-day "floating world."
