FAMILY

Nori Okawa

Ōkawa Nori's works are characterized by their reinterpretation of the concept of ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) with a modern sensibility. In the *FAMILY* series, he explores the theme of self-formation, depicting how the self is shaped through encounters with "foreign objects" outside of preconceived notions. By accepting, chewing on, swallowing, and eventually digesting different values, a person gradually acquires their own distinct identity.

Here, "family" is not limited to a framework of blood relations, but rather a totality of relationships that includes different cultures, religions, and even chance encounters. Oikawa depicts the form of the self that is born from interaction with diverse others as a modern "floating world."
