Preserved Landscapes

Shunsuke Saiki

Since the advent of smartphones, the internet has become an inseparable part of daily life, and the sensation of reality and the net intertwining has become commonplace. Against the backdrop of this contemporary visual environment, Saiki focuses on the enormous flow of images generated and consumed daily, attempting to record and preserve them as paintings.

In this work, Saiki considers the nature of time and life, focusing on the lobster's image of longevity and regeneration. Its ecology of continually renewing its body through molting suggests the possibility of immortality, while also encompassing the reality that its continuation is difficult due to risks associated with growth and external factors. Through these contradictions, the work illustrates the impossibility of eternity and the human consciousness that attempts to resist it.
