Statement

YUGEN Gallery will hold a two-person exhibition by Yuji Suga and Masahiro Masuda in spring 2025.

Picking out cutting-edge artists from the Japanese contemporary art scene

Yuji Suga, an artist affiliated with MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY, is known for his technique of applying paint evenly to a mirrored screen, then scraping off some of the paint to create a work. In recent years, he has been highly praised for his "Liminal Paint" series, which uses different base coats on the same panel.

Masahiro Masuda is known to have works by Yusaku Maezawa, a well-known art collector, in his collection. He photographs the space and projects the image onto the same spot using a projector, repeating this process several times, and then silk-screening the resulting image onto a canvas. This unique technique has also attracted attention.

Yuji Suga and Masahiro Masuda share a common bond as they both work at Studio Kodai (Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture), one of the largest art studios in the Kanto region that brings together up-and-coming artists. Although they have appeared together in group exhibitions before, this is their first exhibition together as just the two of them.

In a time when "images" are overflowing and drifting uncontrollably, Suga Yuji and Masuda Masahiro are presenting works that explore the reason for the existence of painting. Don't miss this exhibition by this notable pair.
