Shirokoma Tao solo exhibition "e-12 -snow on and off all day-"
2022.11.19(Sat) – 2022.11.24(Thu)
Shirokoma Tao's solo exhibition "e-12 -snow on and off all day-" will be held at YUGEN Gallery from Saturday, November 19th to Thursday, November 24th, 2022.
Shirokoma Tao is an artist who uses a unique woodblock print technique that utilizes digital equipment such as graphic software and a laser processing machine to create works rich in design that incorporate mythological narratives.
Shirokoma expresses a poetic white world by replacing various whiteness such as plaster paint and the white background of printing paper with overlapping images with a multi-layered structure like a print.
Shirokoma collects antique books from the 1800s to the early 1900s, as well as antique lace from countries such as France, Germany, and the Czech Republic. I incorporate universal motifs such as trees and lace patterns that have been drawn over time into my works.
The classical and elegant atmosphere of Shirokoma's works stems from this background, but it is not simply a nostalgia. Using a variety of digital equipment and modern work processes, his works have an extremely modern and kitschy feel at the same time.
The group of works on display this time are relief works that combine plaster-painted semi-three-dimensional motifs and woodblock prints with oil-based lithographic ink, and antique lace patterns that combine embossing using two uneven woodblocks and blank printing with woodblocks. This is a woodblock print that has been meticulously applied to printing paper. In addition, Shirokoma Tao's classical and modern poetic world of white, which is constantly exploring more free decorative forms, such as making deformed frames and exhibition fixtures that match the shape of each work, is a must-see. Enjoy!
This exhibition will be held as the 10th exhibition curated by YUGEN Gallery for the bilingual art information magazine "ONBEAT", which reexamines Japanese art culture and disseminates its charm to the world.
