Based in Kyoto, my work has primarily focused on painting. I strive to depict images that are in a stage prior to aiming for a completed outcome, characterized by an approach that treats the visible and invisible as equally significant.
My work begins with images that arise at moments when the reality before my eyes feels inseparable from thought and language. I also treat the consciousness itself that attempts to express these images in the same way as external reality. Through this process, I try to generate paintings where images integrate with bodily movements and intentions, directly transferring onto the canvas. In recent years, alongside painting, I have also begun working with ceramics. Moving between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, the time and cognitive processes involved in an object taking shape have become important elements in Matsuda's current practice.
