Based in Kyoto, I have primarily focused on painting. My work attempts to depict images in a stage prior to aspiring to a complete outcome, and is characterized by treating visible and invisible elements as equally important.
I start with images that arise at moments when I feel the reality before me is inseparable from thought and language. The very consciousness attempting to express these images is treated in the same way as external reality. Through this process, I try to create paintings where images become integrated with bodily movements and intentions, directly settling onto the canvas. In recent years, alongside painting, I have also begun working with ceramics, moving between two- and three-dimensional forms. The time it takes for a subject to emerge as a form and the process of perception have become important elements in Matsuda's current practice.
