Based in Kyoto, I have primarily focused on painting to date. I attempt to depict images that exist at a stage prior to the pursuit of a perfected outcome, and my approach is characterized by treating the visible and the invisible as equally valid.
Starting from images that emerge at moments when the reality before my eyes feels inseparable from thought and language, I treat the consciousness that attempts to express these images as being on par with external reality. Through this process, I try to create paintings where images become integrated with bodily movements and intentions, and these are directly transferred onto the canvas. In recent years, alongside painting, I have also begun working with ceramics, moving between two and three dimensions. The time it takes for an object to materialize as a form, and the process of perception, have become important elements in Matsuda's current practice.
