Ghost

This work re-examines the relationship between language and vision, and meaning and form, through the conceptual method of naming objects. The word "obake" (ghost/monster) is based on the artist's childhood memory of a haunted house at an amusement park—of "obake" as figures that would hit visitors with sticks—and thus contains a discrepancy from the common image of an "obake." This work highlights the arbitrariness of images that arise from naming, and the personal memories that lie behind them.
