FAMILY

Nori Okawa

Okawa Nori's work is characterized by a reinterpretation of the concept of ukiyo-e with a modern sensibility. In her "FAMILY" series, she explores the process of self-formation, expressing how the self is shaped through encounters with "foreign objects" outside preconceived notions. People acquire their own identity by accepting, absorbing, and eventually internalizing different values. "Family" here refers not to a framework limited to blood ties, but to the totality of relationships that encompasses different cultures, religions, and even chance encounters. Okawa depicts the self that emerges from interactions with diverse others as a modern-day "ukiyo."
