Based in Kyoto, I have primarily focused on painting. I attempt to depict images that are in a stage prior to the pursuit of a perfected outcome, and my approach is characterized by treating visible and invisible elements as equally significant.
My work begins with images that arise at moments when I perceive the reality before me to be inseparable from thought and language. The very consciousness that attempts to express these images is treated in the same way as external reality. Through this process, I try to generate paintings where images integrate with bodily movements and intentions, and these are directly transferred onto the canvas. In recent years, alongside painting, I have also begun working with ceramics, moving between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. The time and cognitive process involved in an object taking shape have become important elements in Matsuda's current practice.
