"Structure" solo exhibition by Kiyoo Ota

2022.05.28(Sat) – 2022.06.02(Thu)

From Saturday, May 28 to Thursday, June 2, YUGEN Gallery is holding the solo exhibition "Structure" by sculptor Kiyoo Ota.

After studying architecture at university and working for a foreign investment bank, Kiyoo Ota currently works as a sculptor exploring the themes of social structures and relationships.

At a glance, this group of sculptures may appear to have depth, but viewed from the side it becomes apparent that this is not really so. Ota employs the rules of perspective and optical illusions based on his background in architecture to contemplate the essential beauty of objects and structures.

The exhibition is being held in Shibuya, which is in the midst of a once-a-century redevelopment project with the sounds of steel frame construction reverberating throughout the neighborhood. The exhibition features works that pursue structural beauty, and its title "Structure" is a keyword symbolizing both the ever-changing face of Shibuya and the nature of Kiyoo Ota's artistry.

Many people talk about feeling oppressed in modern society. Kiyoo Ota's works employ the rules of perspective and optical illusions to prompt viewers to look at the future with a brighter outlook by shifting their point of view.

Visit YUGEN Gallery to see the "Structure" solo exhibition by Kiyoo Ota, the third in a series of curated exhibitions at YUGEN Gallery by bilingual art magazine ONBEAT, which focuses a critical lens on Japanese art and culture and communicates their appeal to the world.
